Betts(JP)

A Japanese environmental music artist.
Beginning as a home-recording composer, they have released works both in Japan and internationally, and are now also active in live performance contexts.

Their practice extends beyond music, engaging in performances and collaborations across disciplines such as visual art, butoh dance, film, and theater, moving freely across boundaries of expression.
Their works focus on place and space, centering on environmental sound and guitar.
The music is grounded in the idea that “everything is part of the environment.”

By stepping away from perspectives centered on individual existence or emotion, they treat all phenomena that constitute the world as equal, allowing sound to reveal both their freedom and transience.
In composition, they impose constraints—each piece lasting exactly 9 minutes and 58 seconds, and each record consisting of five tracks—symbolizing a form of pure freedom that emerges only within limitation.

In live settings, they perform both solo and through collaborations with other fields, and are also active as part of the noise unit Mountain Silence.
Notable works include Rumor and Moire.
