Field recordings were made in the Kogushi area, a small seaside district on the outskirts of the city. I chose a spot on the coast with its impressive cranes, which may or may not be moving, and spent many days recording the sound of waves hitting concrete and tractors heading for the fields. Every time I went there, there were fishermen, and I could hear them talking about what that guy was doing when they saw me doing something with my strange equipment. I couldn’t communicate with them, but my eyes met theirs several times. This piece also contains the voice of the fisherman. Their voices are so deeply reverberant that it has a fantastic atmosphere.

The song “Ogushi 03”, which is the closest to natural sound, uses no field recordings. It sounds like waves or a ship’s whistle, but it was created entirely with guitar noise.

The music he creates expresses the ordinary life and the scenery of the neighborhood.

Betts(JP) is an electronic sound artist from Okayama, Japan. He is a multi-instrumentalist who mainly plays live instruments such as guitar, but also uses various instruments. He uses field recordings in his works and edits them on the computer.

The performance is done with very little equipment, just a guitar and a microphone connected to two delay loopers, and the electronic droning is processed by computer in real time. Starting with his second release, “Misago,” the strict limit of five songs per piece, each 9 minutes and 58 seconds long, has given him more freedom and a wider range of expression.
